The truth is that employers are still allowed to test for marijuana as there are no state or federal laws prohibiting it. However, the legal protections for employees using marijuana vary across areas, so organizations should consult the relevant regulations before taking any adverse action based on test results.

Another myth is that occupational health screenings are only relevant for employers working within DOT regulations for drivers. While many screenings are done specifically to comply with the Department of Transportation, these health checks are useful for many different job functions—and many different industries. They should be considered for any position that demands certain physical abilities to perform the role safely.

Finally, one of the most common myths is the notion that drug testing is infallible. It’s important to understand that employee drug testing can only provide confidence for set date ranges, which vary widely depending on the substance and the type of sample taken.
